Hair loss treatment: The ‘most effective’ remedy to boost hair growth – how to make it
Hair loss is inevitable – every day strands fall out. But there is a way to boost hair growth. What is it, and how can it be done?
On average, people lose between 60 to 100 hairs a day, according to trichologist Anabel Kingsley.
Kingsley specialises in the medical practice concerned with the hair and scalp.
The hair has distinct structures: the hair bulb and the hair shaft.

The hair bulb
The hair bulb is situated at the root of the hair follicle – say, for example, in the scalp.
This hair bulb is where growing hair cells are contained.
Growing hair cells continually divide and push upwards, gradually hardening.
As they approach the upper part of the bulb, three inner layers – the cuticle, cortex and medulla – become the hair.
Although, in finer hair, the medulla isn’t always present.
Then three outer layers line the hair follicle (surrounding the three inner layers).
Melanocytes are cells within the hair bulb that make the pigment melanin that gives hair its colour.
The hair shaft
The hair shaft is the hair you can visibly see – it’s made of the strong protein keratin.
This is the same protein that nails are made of too.
Keratin is held together by disulphide and hydrogen bonds.
Disulphide bonds are one of the strongest, naturally occurring bonds in the world.
And inside the hair shaft are the three inner layers: the cuticle, cortex and medulla.

According to Dr Blossom Kochhar, the “most effective” remedy for natural hair growth is the use of coconut milk.
Specifically, Dr Kochhar advises to “take coconut milk from a fresh coconut” – and not to use the liquid from a carton.
Coconut milks is rich in iron, potassium and essential fats to help nourish the hair and scalp.
Dr Kochhar recommends adding half a squeeze of lemon and four drops of essential lavender oil to coconut milk.
She then instructs to mix the ingredients together and to liberally apply on the scalp.
This is one hair treatment best left for an evening of no plans.
This is because Dr Kochhar suggest to leave the mixture on the scalp for up to five hours before rinsing off.
Looking after your strands can help prevent breakages, so it’s time to break that coconut open.
