Drinking beer in moderation shown to be good for your gut health

According to a recent Portuguese study, drinking one beer a day could help keep the doctor away.

The research, published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, looked at men who drank one can of alcoholic or non-alcoholic lager a day and noted any health changes.

They found that after four weeks, diversity improved in the gut microbiome, which is the collection of microbes which live in the intestinal tract.

This is good news for moderate beer drinkers because having a more diverse gut microbiome is linked with a reduction in a number of serious diseases.

These include:

  • Heart disease
  • Diabetes
  • Serious Covid infection
  • Arthritis
  • Multiple sclerosis

Although being teetotal is always a healthier option, the research sheds a light on how moderate beer drinking could be healthier than previously thought.

"There are a lot of myths regarding beer," says study author Ana Faria, PhD, a clinical nutritionist at NOVA Medical School in Lisbon.

"We think it is important to know the impact of moderate consumption of this beverage."

Gut bacteria experts from Amsterdam University identified strong Belgian beers to be among some of the healthiest options.

These include Hoegaarden and Westmalle Tripel as particularly potent sources of the probiotic yeast.

These beers have been fermented twice in the brewery and then again in the bottle positively impacting a person’s gut microbiome.

“You are getting a stronger beer that is very, very healthy,” added Professor Eric Claassen.

He continued: “We don’t want to give people a licence to drink more beer.

“In high concentrations alcohol is bad for the gut but if you drink just one of these beers every day it would be very good for you.”

Keep in mind that the NHS recommends: “Men and women are advised not to drink more than 14 units a week on a regular basis.”
