Arthritis: Doctor gives advice on best foods to help ease pain

With temperatures creeping closer to zero, many arthritis patients can be left with aching and stiff joints.

Arthritis pain can feel worse in colder weather due to changes in barometric pressure that negatively affects joints.

Fortunately, Dr Sunni Patel, from Dish Dash Deets, has shared five best foods to keep you warm and your joints pain-free.

The doctor told “Warming foods are often associated with providing comfort and can potentially help reduce arthritis pain by promoting circulation and providing anti-inflammatory benefits. 

“While there’s no single “magic” food that can cure arthritis, incorporating certain foods into your diet may help manage symptoms.”

1. Spices

The warming colourful powders offer more than a fiery kick to your meals.

Dr Patel explained that the likes of ginger, turmeric, cinnamon and garlic are packed with anti-inflammatory properties. 

“Inflammation is a key driver of arthritis pain, so reducing inflammation can help alleviate discomfort,” he added.

Between soups and hot drinks, there are many different ways you could incorporate these three potent spices into your weekly menu.

2. Warm soups and stews

Cooking up hearty soups and stews with ingredients like vegetables, lean proteins and bone broth could be “soothing” for people battling arthritis pains.

“[They] can provide comfort and relaxation, which can help alleviate pain and stiffness associated with arthritis,” the doctor added.

3. Roasted fish

Rich in omega-3 fatty acids, oily fish, like salmon, mackerel or sardines, could also reduce inflammation and alleviate arthritis symptoms, Dr Patel explained.

If you’re following a plant-based diet, the doctor said that flaxseeds and walnuts are also good sources of omega-3s.

4. Warm herbal teas

While nothing really beats a classic cuppa, Dr Patel suggested reaching for herbal alternatives to ease arthritis pains.

He said: “Herbal teas like chamomile, rosemary, and nettle may have anti-inflammatory and soothing properties, which can help with arthritis discomfort.”

5. Warm beverages

Tea isn’t the only drink that could help ease uncomfortable aches and pains. 

Dr Patel said: “Drinking warm water, herbal teas, or warm milk with a pinch of turmeric or cinnamon can be comforting and soothing for arthritis pain.”
