Mini Karuppan, 46, fell ill in 2015 and was given the bombshell news she needed a new kidney as one of her ones was failing.

After going on the waiting list for two years, she finally got a match and her own NHS colleagues performed the operation to get her back on her feet, to the delight of husband Baz and son Sid, 18.

Now healthy Mini, who works for the Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, has revealed her experience motivated her son to sign up to the organ donor register.

Mini, from Altrincham, lamictal encephalitis Greater Manchester, said: “I’m so thankful I was able to get a matching kidney so fast and really grateful to the donor and their family. We keep in regular contact via the post.

“I came home from work to discover Sid had registered his name with the organ donation list. I was quite surprised at first. However, he has seen the impact and the positive difference it has made to our family.”

The Daily Express is fighting for more organ donors to sign up. It is part of our ongoing battle for poorly Sarah Meredith, 29, of Totnes, Devon, who has cystic fibrosis and has been waiting for more than a year for a new liver – despite the average liver wait time of just 65 days.

Her mother Cathy Meredith, 67, joined our calls this Organ Donation Week for more Britons to sign the register. She said: “It is so important that more people sign up and make it known they wish to give the incredible gift of life.”
