On Tuesday at HIMSS22, it was announced that Salt Lake City-based Intermountain Healthcare is the first health system in the world to earn three-time Stage 7 status under new HIMSS’ new requirements for validating organizations’ use of electronic medical records and data to boost care quality and patient outcomes.
WHY IT MATTERS
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Intermountain clinicians and IT staff developed a self-testing system that put patients in control: they could book appointments online, locate testing sites and then receive digital results for self-collect tests and an automated letter patients could share with their employer.
HIMSS assessed the health system according to three of its maturity models.
The Electronic Medical Record Adoption Model, EMRAM, measures clinical outcomes, patient engagement and clinical use of EMR technology to strengthen organizational performance and health outcomes across patient populations.
The Outpatient Electronic Medical Record Adoption Model, folic acid for mental health or O-EMRAM, assesses maturity of EMR technology in outpatient facilities and its impact on patients served, overall population health and health system operational efficiency with a focus on quality of care, patient safety, and cost reduction.
The Adoption Model for Analytics Maturity, AMAM, measures the analytics capabilities that healthcare organizations have gained from having a strong analytics strategy and competency and advances an organization’s healthcare analytics regardless of the technologies installed.
To reach Level 7, applicants are scored by how they’re using information and technology to improve patient safety and satisfaction, support clinicians and secure data.
THE LARGER TREND
“The Triple Stage 7 recognition from HIMSS validates the hard work our teams have put into using technology to make it easier to improve care and scale best practices,” said Dr. Diego Ize-Ludlow, chief health information officer for Intermountain Healthcare. “We continue to push the envelope of technology to deliver the highest value and to develop the future models of care.”
Intermountain IT leaders have been busy recently.
On Monday, the health system’s Chief Information Security Officer Eric Decker took part in the HIMSS22 Healthcare Cybersecurity Forum, offering his perspective, on a panel with other CISOs, about the challenges – and opportunities – of today’s threat-fraught digital landscape.
This past week, Intermountain Healthcare Chief Information Officer Ryan Smith joined other members of the Patient ID Now coalition in expressing frustration about the ongoing legislative hurdles to innovation in patient matching. He promised to “continue to work to remove the outdated funding restriction in order to achieve a standards-based solution that will enable patients to be accurately connected to their electronic health data.”
And this past week, Healthcare IT News Managing Editor Bill Siwicki spoke with Gregory M. Johnson, vice president of finance at Intermountain, about the health system’s effort to roll out a new financial planning tool to enable a switch from annual budgets to more nimble rolling forecasts.

“These ratings are a good way to take a look under the hood to make sure everything is running as well as we think it is,” said Dr. Farukh Usmani, Intermountain’s medical director of care transformation. “We don’t avoid our annual physical just because we feel good; sometimes it’s beneficial to get a good exam done, to be reviewed by an outside source. The HIMSS validation is a good EMR utilization check from the leader in the industry.”
“Everyone has electronic medical records, but not everyone has the tools and team to give insights and time back to caregivers,” said Seraphine Kapsandoy, RN, chief clinical information officer at Intermountain Healthcare. “What we have in place at Intermountain allows us to embed more clinical knowledge and do more data-driven care and research than ever before.”
