TikTok Is Obsessed With These 11-Foot Rainbow Box Braids

It's Pride, so rainbows and sparkly glitter on literally anything — whether it's merch from companies attempting to show their support or the many ways members of the LGBTQ+ community are expressing themselves while celebrating — is the norm over here. While the former can be a bit irritating without action to back up the sentiment, the latter produces a host of fun and creative makeup looks and hairstyles that we love. (Just check out this round-up of some of our favorites from Black creators last year.)The ingenuity is exciting — especially these 11-foot rainbow box braids created by Pittsburgh-based hairstylist Samira Gillcrese.

Gillcrese shared a video showcasing the length of this impressive braided hairstyle with her TikTok fans on May 31. Her client lies on the floor with all the braids laid straight out and a tape measure right beside the hair. She starts at their face and films the braids from the red roots to the purple tips, showing the 11-foot mark on the tape measure where they finally end.

It's truly remarkable how long these colored box braids are. They feel like they go on for days until we finally see the purple tips. And somehow, it took less than a day to finish them. Gillcrease tells Allure that she used a total of 33 packs of braiding hair and Shine N Jam Magic Fingers For Braiders to create the rainbow hairstyle in 19 hours.

While 11 feet may sound intimidating, Gillcrease says that she has been working with the same client since 2018 to create longer and longer rainbow box braids each year. It started at five feet and then moved to eight feet, eight inches in 2019. She added another foot last year to amp it up to nine feet, eight inches, and they finally hit 11 feet this year.

We're so impressed by the talent Gillcrease possesses. Each vibrant color blends seamlessly into the next for this gorgeous rainbow style that's perfect for Pride and truly whenever. We cant wait to see what length these box braids will reach next year. (We'll put our bets on 13 feet.)
