Lung cancer warning – the subtle sound when you breathe that could be serious
Lung cancer is one of the most serious types of cancer to be diagnosed, as it’s usually difficult to spot until it has spread to other parts of the body. You could be at risk of the disease if you develop a subtle pain on your shoulder, it’s been revealed.
Lung cancer is one of the most common cancers to be diagnosed in the UK, warned the NHS.
Around 45,000 people are diagnosed with lung cancer in the UK every year.
Signs of the disease only tend to reveal themselves once the cancer has spread through the lungs.
One of the key warning signs of lung cancer is wheezing while you breathe.
Wheezing is a relatively common symptom that’s linked to a number of different medical conditions.
But on occasion, it could be caused by something more serious, including lung cancer.
Wheezing is the name given to a high-pitched whistling sound when you breathe.
The sound happens as air moves through narrowed airways.

“Different people have different symptoms for lung cancer,” said the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
“Some people have symptoms related to the lungs. Some people whose lung cancer has spread to other parts of the body have symptoms specific to that part of the body.
“Lung cancer symptoms may include coughing that gets worse or doesn’t go away, chest pain, shortness of breath [and] wheezing.
“Other changes that can sometimes occur with lung cancer may include repeated bouts of pneumonia and swollen or enlarged lymph nodes [glands] inside the chest in the area between the lungs.”

But, just because you start wheezing, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you have lung cancer.
It’s more likely to be caused by a tumour if it’s accompanied by other tell-tale signs of lung cancer.
Your wheezing may also be caused by asthma, hay fever, or sleep apnoea.
You should speak to a doctor if you have wheezing as well as difficulty breathing.

The outlook for lung cancer isn’t as good as other types of cancer.
That’s because the symptoms are usually only spotted in its later stages.
About one in three patients live for at least a year after their diagnosis, while one in 20 live for another 10 years.
