Joel Edergton – who is now a father to two toddlers, who he shares with Christine Centenera, the fashion director of Vogue Australia – admitted he is “someone who suffers from anxiety”. While speaking on ABC’s Australian Story, an acclaimed documentary series, the 48-year-old added that his anxiety is “pretty mild”. “A lot of that… had to do with being scrutinised and not handling it well, and not handling big crowds very well,” he admitted.

“Just going to the premiere of a movie… I know everyone thinks this is glamorous, but it’s sort of terrifying.”

Edergton has made a name for himself starring in The Great Gatsby (2013), The Gift (2015), Loving (2016), and Boy Erased (2018).

For one of his first projects, the TV series Police Rescue, he had to play an “extremely panicked” character, which is how his anxiety probably helped him out.

“I think I got the job on Police Rescue as my character was extremely panicked and anxious, and that’s how I felt going to the audition,” he revealed.

“So they probably thought I was just acting really well,” he added with a laugh.

His anxiety has played out in other areas of his life too, which he revealed to Oprah Winfrey.

Speaking about the delivery of his twins, who were born in May 2021, he said: “I was very nervous.”

He elaborated: “I was working in Queensland and there are some border issues with Sydney and Queensland that pop up. I was getting very nervous that I’d get stuck.”

Anxiety

What distinguishes moments of anxiety to an anxiety disorder? According to Australia’s Department of Health: “Anxiety becomes a disorder when it’s irrational, excessive and when it interferes with a person’s ability to function in daily life.”

The mental health charity Mind listed different types of anxiety disorders, including:

  • Generalised anxiety disorder
  • Social anxiety disorder
  • Panic disorder
  • Phobias
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD)
  • Health anxiety
  • Body dysmorphic disorder
  • Perinatal anxiety.

Everybody can experience symptoms of anxiety in a different way; some could feel the effects on the body, others could experience mental anxiety, and others could have both.

Physical sensations of anxiety could include a churning feeling in the stomach, lightheadedness, pins and needles, and feeling restless.

Other physical manifestations of anxiety could include:

  • Headaches, backache or other aches and pains
  • Faster breathing
  • A fast, thumping or irregular heartbeat
  • Sweating or hot flushes
  • Sleep problems
  • Grinding your teeth, especially at night
  • Nausea (feeling sick)
  • Needing the toilet more or less often
  • Changes in your sex drive
  • Having panic attacks.
  • The effects of anxiety on the mind include:
  • Feeling tense, nervous or unable to relax
  • Having a sense of dread, or fearing the worst
  • Feeling like the world is speeding up or slowing down
  • Feeling like other people can see you’re anxious and are looking at you
  • Feeling like you can’t stop worrying, or that bad things will happen if you stop worrying.

Anxiety can interfere with relationships, holding down a job, and enjoying your leisure time.

There are steps you can take to help manage anxiety, including exercising, breathing techniques, and keeping a journal.

Peer support can be invaluable, as can talking to somebody you trust about your concerns.

If you feel like no matter what you do, your anxiety is out of hand, it could be time to seek help from your doctor.

The doctor could refer you to counselling and medication might be prescribed.
