Doctor recommends ‘beneficial’ ingredient to improve major Covid symptoms

When you contract a respiratory illness, the first things you reach for are likely to be medication and remedies from your local pharmacy.

Paired with plenty of liquids and some rest, this is usually the go-to recipe for getting better.

However, Dr Tamara Alireza, Functional Medicine practitioner at Skinfluencer London shared that your diet could also make a difference to your illness.

Used as a fragrant spice in curries and a warming ingredient in teas, ginger has been around for centuries.

Apart from its pleasant taste, the herb has been widely used in traditional medicine for treating various disorders.

The popular cooking ingredient could also offer some “beneficial” effects when it comes to Covid.

Dr Alireza said: “Ginger has shown to be an anti-inflammatory with anti-oxidative properties.

“Certain cases of COVID-19 exhibit overproduction of pro-inflammatory molecules that can perpetuate negative symptoms, so herbs and spices that are able to mitigate this response can be beneficial.

“Ginger benefits can be attributed to phenolic acids that can be absorbed through the intestinal tract to exert antioxidant effects by scavenging free radicals, thereby deterring cellular damage as a result of free radicals and oxidative stress.”

What’s more, the yellow herb could potentially reduce severity, duration and symptoms of coronavirus.

The doctor said: “Ginger could help improve respiratory distress, and symptoms of nausea or stomach upset.

“Additionally, some patients with COVID-19 have demonstrated severe respiratory symptoms, and ginger has been shown to exhibit bronchodilating activity, relaxing the smooth muscle in the human airway, decreasing coughing times, and ameliorating asthma. “

Don’t just take the expert’s word for it, as a review, published in the Journal of Traditional Chinese Medical Sciences, also backs ginger’s antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidative effects on Covid.

The review explained that these powers can affect the key fundamental processes that participate in Covid development.

While the researchers highlighted the potential of ginger and its compounds on the possible management of COVID-19, they also added that the herb and its effects need to be further evaluated in future studies.

If you want to add the yellow spice to your arsenal of protection against Covid, Dr Alireza recommended grating it into dishes, bakes and stir-fries.

Dr Alireza said: “Dried or stir-fried ginger exhibits the strongest antioxidant activity, as the phenolic compounds are five times higher than in fresh ginger. However, fresh ginger has been shown to inhibit the attachment of viruses in studies, reducing penetration into host cells and thus diminishing viral replication.”
