As Covid-19 has raged on, government officials and physicians have warned the public to be vigilant of a new onset of a dry cough and a temperature above 100 degrees as key symptoms for the coronavirus.

However, hospitals around the UK are beginning to see a new symptom appearing in many Covid-19 patients.

A stomach pain could be a symptom of Covid-19 and one needs to be vigilant if they have begun feeling this symptom in their stomach.

Director for Public Health for Worcester, Michael Hirsh said the city’s hospitals are now seeing patients who have tested positive for the deadly virus also displaying symptoms of only abdominal pain.

Some Covid-19 patients have reported experiencing tummy ache just before developing the other known symptoms including fever, cough and shortness of breath.

In fact, a study published in the American Journal of Gastroenterology, suggests that people might experience digestive issues which could signal an infection and this could include diarrhoea.

Researchers analysed data from 204 patients with Covid-19 in China’s Hubei province and discovered that a staggering 48.5 percent of these patients arrived at the hospital and were suffering from digestive issues.

These issues ranged from diarrhoea, vomiting or pain in the abdomen.

What the expert said

Michael Hirsh said: “What we’ve been seeing is patients coming in not so much with complaints about respiratory stuff but with abdominal stuff.

“The pain in the stomach is a result of a patient developing pneumonia in the lower lobes of the lungs. If the lobes are inflamed frequently, the irritation in the diaphragm causes pain in the abdomen.

“The more we see the disease, we’re going to see manifestations of the disease that don’t fit that classic picture of dry hacking cough and fever. We’re going to see other manifestations of it.”

Hirsh said many of the patients who were experiencing abdominal pain didn’t have any respiratory symptoms.

He added that at the time, many of his younger patients were displaying the abdominal pain symptom as opposed to respiratory issues.

Whereas the older patients displayed more of the respiratory symptoms as opposed to tummy issues.

“Symptoms that you’d see, nausea, diarrhoea and fever, at this point I would warn the public, they shouldn’t write off those symptoms just the routine springtime gastroenteritis or flu,” warned Hirsh.

Other lesser known symptom of Covid-19 include an inability to arise after sleeping, a loss of taste or smell, headaches, nose congestion, red eyes or diarrhoea.

It’s crucial to monitor these symptoms and pay particular attention to your diet as this could also be causing tummy issues.
