Ariel Winter Just Cut Off Part Of Her Thumb While Cooking
- Ariel Winter accidentally sliced off the top of her thumb while cooking.
- The injury required a visit to the hospital because she sliced into an artery.
- Ariel says she’ll likely have a “sad-looking thumb” after it heals.
Ariel Winter justlanded in the last place anyone wants to be these days—the hospital—after accidentally slicing off the top of her thumb.
Ariel told Access that it all happened when she tried to cook Greek food at home this week. “I had chopped four onions just before I chopped this one thing. Chopped four onions and it was great—I just got new knives too,” she said. “So I went to chop a peeled tomato and sliced the top part of my thumb off on a peeled tomato.”
Arial also held her bandaged thumb up to the camera and ouch.
The Modern Family star said that it took a moment for both her and her boyfriend Luke Benward to fully comprehend what happened.”I was so shocked,” she said. “It was more like I was hyperventilating. I was like I should be crying but I just can’t believe it.”
Ariel said she actually sliced an artery (i.e. a blood vessel that carries blood from your heart to other places in your body) and it ended up bleeding so much that she had to go to the hospital. Luckily, Luke was thoughtful enough to bring the tip of her finger along to the ER.
But while she was at the hospital, a nurse “actually just gave [the piece of the thumb] to me in a plastic bag, and didn’t like tell me that it was the tip of my thumb, so I accidentally threw it away and we had to go get it,” Ariel said.
FYI, here’s the right way to chop an onion:
Now, Ariel is on the mend, although she said the whole thing “definitely hurt and wasn’t fun.” Still, she’s putting things into perspective.
“Obviously I was bleeding a lot but again it’s my thumb,” she said, pointing out that many people are in the hospital for “so much worse and I was like, you know, I was perfectly fine.”
She wrapped up her thumb saga on this note: “I sliced my thumb off and it’s sad, I’ll have a mildly sad-looking thumb, but it’ll be okay.”
