The season one finale of Young Rock, the NBC comedy-drama based on the early life and career of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, includes a pivotal moment which has been cited so many times that it has taken on the air of an urban legend—and it all ties into Johnson’s dedication to his training, which he continues to uphold to this day.
Famous for his intense workouts, Johnson claims that he never cuts a training session short, even if that means leaving other people waiting. The wrestler-turned-actor shared the relevant clip from the show on his Instagram, aldara laboratorio and provided some context for what he calls a “true and intense story but a defining one.”
The story goes as follows. During his senior year of high school, Johnson signed with the University of Miami’s football team. But when head coach Dennis Erickson flew to Pennsylvania to officially offer him a full scholarship, Johnson kept him waiting for an hour so that he could finish his gym session first.
“I was working out and had a choice to cut my workout short OR be a beast and finish strong,” Johnson wrote on Instagram. “I finish strong. They were pissed. Until I came home, sweaty as all hell and I looked them in the eyes and was honest about finishing the workout. They actually LOVED that.”
Even way back then, it was important to Johnson that he commit to everything he started, with no early outs or half-measures. Fortunately, all’s well that ends well.
“These days, there’s no explaining necessary as everyone in my personal and professional life understands that I’ll always finish my training,” Johnson added. “It’s a psychological anchor… to always finish the job.”
