Eris: New COVID-19 coronavirus variant detailed

We are now more than three years on since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

While we are no longer seeing the same extreme infection rates, and rules on wearing masks and isolating have now been scrapped, the impact of the disease is still being felt.

As reported, ramipril capsules 10mg many countries are seeing a rise again in Covid cases.

The UK is no exception to this, with data from the ZOE Health Study showing that there were 92,965 new cases of symptomatic Covid on September 1.

This was an increase of more than 42,000 from August 1.

ZOE also estimates there are currently around 1.15 million people in the UK with Covid – or one in 58.

This is thought to be caused in part by the new variants of the disease, including Eris, which is now the second most prevalent strain of Covid, and Pirola, which was first identified in the UK last month.

Both are descendants of Omicron, a contagious strain that was first documented in the UK in 2021.

As with any infectious disease, spotting the symptoms as soon as possible could help you prevent the spread – as well as seek the treatment you need.

An expert spoke with Express.co.uk about some of the signs of both strains to look for.

Symptoms

Abbas Kanani, pharmacist at Chemist Click, explained: “Main symptoms of the Pirola variant are a sore throat, runny or blocked nose, a cough with or without phlegm and headaches.

“The main symptoms of the Eris variant are a sore throat, runny nose, blocked nose, sneezing, dry cough, headache, wet cough, hoarse voice, muscle aches and altered smell.

“Traditional symptoms such as shortness of breath, loss of smell and a fever are now far less common.”

Should we return to wearing masks?

Mr Kanani, advised considering keeping your face covered when in contact with others.

“Although mask wearing is no longer mandatory, you could consider wearing a face covering if you’re in close contact with other people or in crowded places,” he said.

“Eris is now the second most prevalent variant in the UK and consequently, the UK has seen a spike in hospital admissions.

“The Pirola variant has had a high number of mutations, however there are no indications that it is spreading quickly or that it is more deadly.

“The situation is being closely monitored, however, it is too early to determine the full implications of both variants as of yet so it is best not to panic.”

Eris is also known as the EG.5.1 strain and Priola is also known as BA.2.86.

If you experience Covid symptoms the NHS recommends staying home and avoiding contact with others for five days if possible.

You should avoid contact with vulnerable people for at least 10 days after symptoms start or testing positive.
