There are two types of people in this world – those who use an alarm clock in the morning and those who, by some miracle, are able to get up without.

Now, a new study shows that those who do actually use an alarm might be worse off than those who wake up naturally.

Researchers at Notre Dame University said that those who use an alarm clock to wake up feel more tired than those who wake up naturally. And bad news for snoozers, as this snoozing may be a sign of being ‘chronically tired’.

Scientists said that those who require an artificial stimulator to wake up feel more lethargic because the alarm disrupts the natural sleep pattern.

This disrupted sleep might then lead to more caffeine consumption which can lead to delayed sleep, thus more lethargy.

By comparison, those who rise naturally slept for longer and were probably less reliant on caffeine.

The experts explained that when we wake up naturally, the body experiences a stress response which leaves us feeling more alert in the morning.

But using an alarm clock means we skip this natural stress response, leading to an interrupted sleep cycle.

The study surveyed 450 American adults in full-time work, pharmacy unit of measure and used data collected from respondents wearing devices that measured sleep duration and heart rate.

They found that women were 50% more likely to snooze than men, but those who did hit snooze were found to experience more disturbances during sleep time.

Dr Stephen Mattingly, lead author of the study, said: ‘Most of what we know about snoozing is taken from data on sleep, stress or related behaviours. Alarm clocks, smartphones, they all have snooze buttons.

‘The medical establishment is generally against the use of snoozing, but when we went to look at what hard data existed, there was none.

‘We now have the data to prove just how common it is — and there is still so much that we do not know. So many people are snoozing because so many people are chronically tired.’

It’s all become a bit of a cycle, you snooze because you tired, then you’re tired because of disrupted sleep, then you drink caffeine, and it might keep you up again.

But there are ways to ensure quality night’s sleep and they might just help you stop reaching for the snooze button in the morning.
