Green chiretta – a traditional herbal remedy used in Thailand – has been approved by the country’s government as an “effective and cheap” herbal treatment to treat coronavirus. Thailand’s government claims that a successful trial, conducted in prisons, shows that out of 11,800 inmates who took green chiretta to treat coronavirus, 99.02 percent recovered. Jail medic Chitsanuphong Saublaongiw said: “Green chiretta has a substance called andrographolide.”
Saublaongiw explained that “the substance helps limit the spread of the virus”.
He continued: “After taking green chiretta, the prisoners had better chest X-ray results, fewer symptoms, the disease was less severe, baclofen mechanism of action and they returned to normal quickly.”
Thailand jails are reportedly overcrowded and cramped, according to Sky News.
Therefore, around a quarter of the country’s prisoners tested positive for coronavirus in the six months from April 2021.
Around 141 jails around Thailand are reportedly planning to produce 38 million green chiretta tablets by November.
Thailand’s minister of justice, Somsak Thepsuthin stated: “If we use modern medicine, the cost is 20 times, 30 times, 50 times higher…
“And in the prisons, it’s very crowded. We must have [green chiretta] to treat people.
“If it’s a mild illness, we can use this medicine, as it’s inexpensive and effective.”
While Thailand’s authorities have cleared green chiretta for use in mild cases, it is not a substitute for vaccination.
The herbal remedy does not prevent an infection with Covid and it is not suitable for severe cases.
Dr Mayuree Tangkiatkumjai, of the department of clinical pharmacy at Srinakharinwirot University, commented on the herbal remedy.
“Andrographolide is referred to as a substance found in green chiretta that helps suppress viruses and inflammation,” he said.
“However, COVID-19 is still a new emerging infectious disease, so there is no sufficient research to confirm that green chiretta can prevent and cure COVID-19 yet.”
Dr Tangkiatkumjai pointed out that “suitable” dosages of green chiretta “is still debatable”.
In addition, further studies are needed to verify its efficacy and side effects.
Two more trials of green chiretta, involving 1,400 Covid patient with mild symptoms, is expected to be concluded by next spring.
What is green chiretta?
Green chiretta is a plant native to South Asian countries, said RxList – an online medical resource, owned by WebMd.
Its leaf and stem have frequently been used to prevent and treat the common cold.
Side effects can include loss of appetite, diarrhoea, vomiting, rash, headache, runny nose, and fatigue.
However, the herbal remedy is “likely safe” when taken in the short term.
