Turmeric is one of the most well-known spices around the world – mainly for its bright orange colour. But it’s also one of the most powerful spices at protecting against disease, it’s been claimed.
The spice is used to give curry its distinctive taste and colour.
It’s the main spice used in the Indian cuisine, but its health benefits are an added bonus.
Turmeric’s active ingredient, curcumin, is largely responsible for its health benefits.
Curcumin is what makes turmeric a ‘functional food’; a type of food that has a “potentially positive effect on health beyond basic nutrition”.
“The herb turmeric is one of the top nutrients in the world, whether we’re talking about the powder, extract or pills,” said nutritionist Dr Josh Axe.
He wrote on his website: “What turmeric does for the body is amazing.
“Health-wise the benefits range in everything from helping with blood clots and depression to combating inflammation, boosting skin health, regulating cholesterol and more.
“I highly recommend using turmeric in recipes and perhaps even purchasing it in supplement form to take advantage of the benefits.”

Blood clots
Regularly eating turmeric has been claimed to help protect against blood clots.
Lab and animal studies revealed turmeric lowers the risk of platelet aggregation.
Diabetes
Diabetes patients might benefit from adding more turmeric to their diet.
The spice helps to protect against blood sugar spikes, which can result in damage to the nerves.
Skin health
The spice is a natural anti-inflammatory and antioxidant, which makes it an ideal remedy for some skin conditions.
Psoriasis and eczema symptoms can be exacerbated from inflammation.
But scientists have also claimed that turmeric can improve the “glow and lustre” of the skin.
