Long, thick, and healthy hair is the dream for most of us, but it’s pretty difficult to achieve. Tiktok users have been sharing their hair growth journeys, revealing that rice water was the ingredient responsible for the results. Basmati, Jasmine, Brown or Sticky, it doesn’t matter… apparently they all stimulate hair growth. But does rice water really grow your hair? How?
Tiktok user @mistica.aa took to the app to show off her “extreme hair growth”, which she attributed to using rice water twice a week.
The video has amassed more than 1.3 million views and encouraged other social media users to try it for themselves.
Not only does the hack supposedly make your hair grow, but apparently it also makes your hair look shinier and feel softer, healthier and less knotty.
So how do you use rice water on your hair, and does it really work?
The routine is simple, you pour clean rice into an air-tight container, add some cold water, and mix them together until the water looks “milky white”.
The Tiktok user @misticia.aa recommends using one cup of Jasmine rice to two or three cups of water.
Put the lid on the container, leave it for one to three days and pour the mixture into a spray bottle.
Some people say the smell is off-putting, so you can add lemon peel, orange peel or essential oils to improve it.
Next, spray the rice water onto your hair until it is damp.
The video’s creator recommends focussing on the roots, as that’s what she did to achieve such excellent results.
Leave the rice water on your hair for two hours and then wash your hair as normal.
Alternatively, you could use Gallinée’s Fermented Rice Water range, which is full of prebiotics and postbiotics to balance your scalp’s microbiome.
Dr. Marie Drago, founder of Gallinée, said: “In order for your hair to grow, you need keratin – a fibrous protein. Keratin needs a mixture of amino acids to thrive in the body – eighteen acids to be exact.
“Rice water contains an impressive eight of these acids, giving the hair the nourishment it needs to grow.”
The line contains a cleansing cream, a hair and scalp mask, and a serum (all available on Cult Beauty)
Does rice water make hair grow?
Using rice water in your hair isn’t exactly a new trend. In fact, it has been used since the Heian period, which started in around 794 and ended in 1185 in Japan.
Japanese women, who were known for their long and thick hair, used the very same trick.
Studies have shown that inositol, a carbohydrate found in rice, is great at penetrating and repairing strands of hair.
Rice water improves the appearance of damaged hair while also protecting your hair from damage in the future.
Rice water is filled with amino acids, vitamins B and E, minerals, and antioxidants.
All of these things work together to improve the condition of your hair.
However, using rice water won’t combat hormonal or genetic problems with hair loss.
