NHS trusts in England have reportedly been told to prepare for the possible vaccination of this group from September 6. The Department of Health said that “No decisions have been made” but it is planning “for a range of scenarios”.

Devi Sridhar, professor of global public health at the University of Edinburgh, said “waiting and watching costs time”.

She told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “It’s an emergency situation and we have Delta, which is so infectious.

“I mean, it’s just flying through schools as we know.”

Ministers are encouraging school and college students to be tested twice on-site on return from the break and then twice weekly at home during September.

The drive is backed by 18-year-old swimmer Matthew Richards, who won gold at the Tokyo Olympics, and NHS paediatrician and TV presenter Dr Ranj Singh.
