Omicron has also changed what we look for in terms of symptoms.

They are less severe than those caused by Delta.

Now, according to the ZOE App, there could be five symptoms that appear just two days after infection.

The ZOE App allows people to put in how they’re feeling after they’ve tested positive so scientists can get a better idea as to how COVID acting.

These five symptoms include:
• Dry/scratchy throat
• Headache
• Fatigue
• Runny nose
• Sneezing

If this sounds a lot like a cold, you’re not wrong.

As has been discovered, Omicron has symptoms akin to a common cold.

Added to this the fact that Omicron results in milder illness than Delta and you have tricky scenario.

It is the middle of the cold and flu season, so having a variant that causes similar symptoms makes it very hard to contain.

This is because people could get those symptoms and think they have a cold rather than COVID-19.

This is why it is important to get the message out that, because they are so similar, it is crucial that if you feel those symptoms and you’re about to see an immuno-vulnerable person or an elderly relative, that you take a Lateral Flow Test.

Whilst COVID may be milder for most, for those who are unvaccinated or have a weak immune system, it can still result in hospitalisation.

On top of the hundreds already being admitted into hospitals with the Omicron variant at a time when England is the only one of the home nations not to introduce restrictions before New Year’s Eve.

As London continues to be the UK’s Omicron hotspot, this is a move that has surprised and confused many scientists and individuals.

The UK government’s main policy to fight Omicron has so far been to err on the side of caution with regard to restrictions.

Instead, the focus has been on the vaccination programme and getting more people boosted.

So far millions have come forward for the third, second or even first dose.

There are still millions unvaccinated however, and as a result, still a long way to go before we can relax about Omicron this winter.
