Managing Emotions during the COVID-19 Struggle
The stress of modern-day life has given birth to fluctuating feelings in most of us. So many factors influence our behavior these days that there’s no specific reason for a mood swing. In today’s scenario, when the lines between home life and office life are diminishing, and people are confined to their quarters, keeping a check on emotions has become increasingly difficult. And we know that emotions have the power to guide us towards right or wrong actions. So, it is crucial to determine whether to trust our emotional triggers and act on them or not. And in this battle, emotional regulation (the process by which individuals dominate their emotions) is the need of the hour.
But, how can one work on their ability to regulate their emotions? Well, the pointers listed in the next section can undoubtedly help.
Strengthening Your Emotional Regulation
There are many ways to cultivate emotional regulation in one’s nature:
- Self–awareness, and recognition of feelings
Creating awareness in the inner self and the beliefs we encounter help us combat stress and anxiety. If we identify and name a particular emotion – sadness, happiness, hopelessness, shame, and anxiety – it becomes easy for us to activate the alteration process.

- Combating with the habit of judging
These days, due to COVID-19, people are experiencing an unknown flood of emotions where they feel numb. They become ignorant of the sensations as a result of psychological trauma. But they don’t realize that this gives negative feelings a lot of space to build up. Hence, investigating the reason for one’s feelings is a must. If the grounds behind emotions are known, we can stop categorizing them into good or bad.
- Cognitive reappraisal, adaptability, self-soothing, and self-compassion
The way we think is very critical. If we work on modifying the way we think, conquering the internal war of emotions becomes painless. As a result, we’re able to adapt to the toughest situations seamlessly. Self-soothing by indulging in meditation can be a useful trick here. Remembering and pursuing our primary talents, hobbies, and passions will help us create a platform of self-compassion, and hence, self-control.

- Miscellaneous practices
Creating emotional support for self saves a lot of energy from getting invested in negative emotions. You can do this by diverting attention from the dark side to the brighter side. The best example is to learn instead of blaming situations.
