Hair loss affects millions of men and women, and it can have a negative impact on a person’s mental and social well-being. Peppermint has been used for health purposes for many years, with experts believing that the ancient Greeks, Egyptians, and Romans used mint thousands of years ago.
Peppermint oil is the essence of peppermint extracted into an oil. Some peppermint oils are stronger than others.
The strongest types are made using modern distillation techniques and are called essential oils.
Peppermint essential oil is the most common type of peppermint oil available for purchase. It can be used for health, beauty, and cleaning purposes.
Peppermint contains a compound called menthol. Menthol is responsible for many of the benefits of peppermint oils. Menthol also gives peppermint its taste, smell, and cooling sensation.
In a study published in the Korea Science, peppermint oil to promote hair growth without toxic signs was investigated.
The study noted: “This study investigated the effect of peppermint oil on hair growth in mice.
“The animals were randomized into four groups based on different topical applications: saline (SA), jojoba oil (JO), three percent minoxidil (MXD), and three percent peppermint oil (PEO).
“The hair growth effects of the four-week topical applications were evaluated in terms of hair growth, histological analysis, enzymatic activity of alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and gene expression of insulin-like growth, known bio-markers for the enhanced hair growth.”
The study found that of the four experimental groups, the PEO group showed the most prominent hair growth effects: a significant increase in dermal thickness, follicle number, and follicle depth.
“These results suggest that PEO induces a rapid anagen stage and could be used for a practical agent for hair growth without change of body weight gain and food efficiency,” concluded the study.

A study published in Toxicological Research suggests that a peppermint oil solution promotes hair growth.
The peppermint oil used performed better than minoxidil, which is a hair growth product approved by United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Menthol, the main component in peppermint oil, has been shown to increase blood flow to the area where it is applied.
Another study in Microvascular Research found that a four percent menthol solution caused blood vessels to widen, which increases blood flow.
Though this has not been directly linked to hair growth, better blood circulation to the skin could, in theory, encourage more hair to grow in the affected area.
Peppermint oil can cause a cold, tingling feeling when it increases circulation to the area it’s applied to.
When applied to the scalp this can help promote hair growth during the anagen (or growing) phase.
Studies have found that peppermint oil, when used on mice, increased the number of follicles, follicle depth, and overall hair growth.
To use peppermint oil to help increase hair growth, mix two drops of peppermint essential oil with the carrier oil of your choice.
If you don’t have scalp massage oil, you can use a simple household oil like coconut, jojoba, or shea butter oil.
Massage it into your scalp and leave on for five minutes before washing out thoroughly with shampoo and conditioner.
