This is known as premature menopause.
The symptoms can be severe, but there are some alternative remedies available.
This includes natural remedies such as Valerian.
Valerian is a naturally occurring herb that is used in a number of herbal medicines.
When used in this way it is there to increase relaxation and make the user feel calm.
A study on 68 women published by Iran J Pharmacy, found that valerian supplements were effective at reducing hot flash severity; they were found to be more effective than a placebo.
In a second, smaller study of just 60 women, the severity of hot flashes was also found to be lower.
It was also found that valerian can be effective when in combination with other natural ingredients.
When combined with lemon balm, a study found that valerian was effective at improving sleep.
Whilst valerian is effective at treating the symptoms of menopause, it can result in some side effects.
These include:
• Nausea
• Headaches
• Drowsiness
• Dizziness
It is important to stress that this is not conclusive data on the effects of valerian and strong evidence for its efficacy is lacking.
Menopause can be a hard time for any woman given the potentially severe nature of the symptoms.
These include, as listed by the NHS:
• Hot flushes
• Libido (reduced sex drive)
• Night sweats
• Vaginal dryness
• Difficulty sleeping
• Low mood
• Anxiety
• Problems with memory and concentration
The NHS says that you should see GP if you have symptoms of the menopause that you find troubling or experiencing before you reach the age of 45.
Treatments for menopause are varied with some including hormone replacement therapy and vaginal oestrogen creams.
Others include cognitive behavioural therapy and eating a health diet whilst exercising regularly.
