Lockdown might be the perfect time to try prosecco pilates

Ready for a fitness challenge? Prosecco pilates might be the way to go.

This isn’t just getting boozy while working out.

Prosecco pilates involves doing a pilates workout while balancing a glass of bubbly.

It’s been popularised by fitness instructor Kelly Ravenscroft, 41, from Sutton Coldfield in the West Midlands, who says the challenge of keeping a glass steady helps to improve flexibility, muscle strength and balance, as well as toning the abs, lower back, hips, and bum.

Prosecco Pilates can be done in the house or garden and Kelly says all you need is a mat, a glass of prosecco and a quiet space to lose yourself in your exercise.

Kelly caters for all levels, ages and abilities, from complete beginners to those who have done pilates before.

She said: ‘I added a glass of prosecco to our last class of the week as a way to relax and unwind.

‘We were all in our pyjamas as well, so it was meant to be a way of connecting virtually with each other – as if we were having a drink at the end of class.

‘I’m trying to bring a bit of normality to a very unreal situation.’

One move is the ‘superman’, where you extend one arm forward and the opposite leg back while keeping the glass level in one hand.

Then there’s the challenge of doing side planks and single leg extensions, all while making sure you don’t spill a drop of your prosecco.

Kelly, who has been an instructor for 10 years, said: ‘My business has always been face to face, when lockdown hit I was forced to close all my classes down.

‘I’m teaching a group of 200 women Prosecco Pilates, they can join the live sessions or do them whenever they have time.’

Pilates enthusiast Charlotte Ellis, 23, said: ‘Me and my mum enjoyed the class, mainly because it was an excuse to have a glass of prosecco.

‘It was lovely to know that everyone else who did the class was also doing the same.’

Our recommendation: use a plastic champagne flute and don’t preface your workout with an initial glass of bubbly. Keeping your balance is hard enough without being sloshed.
